The Caring Like Karen Awards were established in memory of the ultimate caregiver, Karen Mason, who lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in 2012. Karen lived her life to make others happy. As a caregiver, she was unsurpassed. Her definition of a good day was when the person in her care was waited upon, cared for and smiling. If that didn't happen, Karen wasn’t happy. She was the “perfect” caregiver. In Karen’s honor, the Caring Like Karen Awards will recognize caregivers who emulate Karen’s love and patience for those in their care.

Each year, six recipients are selected from numerous nominations submitted by people in the Greater Cincinnati area who are seeking a special award for their caregiver. A committee of area healthcare professionals, nursing home administrators, home care coordinators and other individuals whose background and expertise in caregiving, reviews all nominations submitted and makes the final decision.

Awards are presented in the following categories:

  • Hospital/Hospice
  • Nursing Home/Retirement Community
  • Home Care
  • Physician
  • Child Caregiver
  • Family Caregiver
  • The recipients of the caregiver’s services must reside in Butler, Hamilton or Warren County.
  • The caregiver may be compensated for his/her care or perform services on a volunteer basis.
  • The caregiver may be a medical professional or a non-medical employee.
  • The patient(s), for which the caregiver is being recognized, must be living or deceased within the past year.
  • The Recipient must agree to attend the awards luncheon.

Because caregivers focus so much on others and so little on themselves, it was Karen’s wish that the award provide something special and meaningful for the winners. Therefore, in addition to their plaque and honorary luncheon, each recipient will receive a gift chosen by the nominator and pre-approved by the committee, and valued up to $1,000. Their gifts will remain a secret until presented at the luncheon.

The Caring Like Karen Fund was established in memory of Karen Mason, a dedicated caregiver who lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in 2012. The Caring Like Karen Award seeks to honor those caregivers who emulate Karen's love and patience for those in their care.
